The bindings that were used during the Byzantine era, in the Eastern Mediterranean. Its main characteristic is the wooden boards with grooves, which are flush at head and tail with the edges of the textblock. The projecting endbands are often decorated and extend over the wooden boards. The textblock, sewn following a chain stitch pattern, is secured by fastenings usually along the three edges. For furnishings, metal elements such as bosses and corner pieces are often used.
